Goat Barn

My parent’s farm has an old goat barn that I will be helping to tear down while in Canada on vacation. The barn held out goats when we had them and countless other types of livestock from when the previous fmaily lived there for generations. The barn is at least 120 years old based on the size of the boards used (massive!) and the hand made square head nails. The building is in bad shape and will probably not survive another winter. The good parts salvaged will be used to make a garden shed for storing lawn chairs. I did not get any outside pictures but got some inside shots of the structure.  I was playing around with my digital cameras and tried to get some nice shots. Enjoy. I will be posting once the actual tear down begins. We should began again in a week or so.

Honey……

I’m home. The flight took around 17 hours plus a 6 hour layover at Narita Airport in Japan. Also a three hour drive from Pearson Airport to my home. It’s great to be back home and surrounded by noises and smells I want to be around! This time around I’m pretty busy here too. I’ll be…

  1. Seeing a whackload of friends I haven’t seen in ages.
  2. Seeing Virginia and Ty from Saturday-Monday.
  3. Tearing down our old goat barn. The beams have rotted out and the building must be torn down.
  4. Recharge for Korea. I was feeling somewhat worn out and I really want to get recharged. I hate feeling worn out.

I’ve also been busy taking pictures of everything too. I’ll be sure to post those up as well as whatever I fancy. Have a good week and weekend!

WSoilk

It has been a very wet week in South Korea. The monsoon season is here and powerful rains have been on and off all week. I got home today from going to Naju and Daejon to see that a barrier/retraining wall(??) for the small mountain had eroded during the heavy rains. The rains made the soil unstable and the soil eroded and took out part of the wall.

Eight Days!

Eight days to go till Canada! I’m excited to say the least. I went home during the Winter vacation not because I wanted but because I had to. I had no clothes and lacked things I needed. This time I REALLY want to be home for several reasons.

1. My birthday is the day after I land in Canada.
2. I will be seeing Virginia and Ty, two of the best people I’ve ever met in Korea and in life.
3. I love summers back home.

The school semester is really winding down quickly. I don’t have any real classes to speak of until August. My second graders are going on a camping trip next Monda, meaning I won’t have a class to teach until August 24th. ^^

This weekend I’m heading to Naju to see friends then to Costco in Daejon. Looking forward toit.

Awesome Korean Things: Online Shopping

I recently had the balls to try and do online shopping for the first time in Korea. I have to say that it is indeed awesome. One of the most popular online shopping sites in Korea is G Market. There is also Global Gmarket which has more English than Korean G Market.

What I enjoy abou GMarket is how much of everything tere is on the site. From accessories to toys to food to whatever else you can think of, you can most likely find it on the site. What I especially enjoy is how you don’t need a credit card in Korea to do online shopping. Most sites and sellers on sites give you the option of making payments through bank machines. This sounded like a scary thing for me tod o at fist but found it was a very easy thing to do by myself.

What’s also great about living in a small country is how rapid delivery is. Most items arrive the next day after a payment is made. I’d usually have to wait a week or two for anything to arrive back in Canada.

I”ve bought clothes, Lego (I know…), and computer parts off GMarket and had relatively few issues or problems. It does help to have a Korean friend of your coteacher help you with setting up accounts for these sites. I also recommend getting anything you ordered sent to your school. I’d be worried about it getting lost or stolen if it were delivered to where I live.

I will also post some links to other Korean sites my friends use for online shopping.

Where To Walk?

Korea is not known as the safest country in the world to live or work in. Personal safety is sometimes taken for granted as is the safety of others. I’ve seen many kids crammed in the back of car, not wearing a seatbelt or hanging half out the window. It’s just what happens here. Same goes for construction work. This thread is not about the lack of safety precautions for the workers but for the everyday people. This road last year when I first arrived in Mokpo was a tennis court that was used by older Koreans every morning. Around April of last year, the Koreans stopped coming and everything was torn down and left until this year when it was turned into a road. I would always use the sidewalk right beside the court to walk to school. The sidewalk gave way to build the road. To walk, you have to walk on the busy road and hope the cars stay over and don’t come too close to you. This video was filmed one month ago and there is now a sidewalk. For a while this was the only way to walk. Dangerous and stupid.

I’m Still Alive…

I’m still alive. I haven’t been posting at all the past month essentially because my laptop I am using is old and painful to use and the computer I use at school is not much better. I just build a desktop put together ordering parts off of Gmarket (which I will write about as an Awesome Korean Thing). The new computer ROCKS and I will again be posting regularly as a result. Here is a run down on what has been happening in my life and in Korea.

- Blackee, my cat of ten years is dead. He was attacked by Coyotes in Canada and survived but was not doing well. My parents had him put down. RIP buddy.
- I go home to Canada for vacation in 17 days!
- North Korea has not blown up the South.
- Final exams for this semester are happening at middle and high schools across South Korea. These exams are also responsible for giving me four days off from teaching this week.

Happy belated Canada Day as well.
