Chuseok Presents

Chuseok is upon us for another year and that means getting funky presents from the school! Foreign teachers from previous years have told they’ve gotten anything from toothpaste to boxes of anchovies to alcohol from their schools as Chuseok presents. Last year at my school, teachers at my school got three types of jame from Jeju and it was actually a pretty good gift that I still enjoy eating. So what did I get this year? I got………………

indigestion medicine. Yes it is true. The school gave every teacher indigestion medicine. Heh.

Jinju Lantern Festival Canned Because of Swine Flu

According to Brian in Jeollanamdo, the Jinju Lantern Festival has been canceled because of Swine Flu. This REALLY bums me out because this was one of the most amazing festivals I’ve seen in Korea and one that is beautiful both day and night (especially at night). More and more festivals are being closed due to Swine Flu scare.

  • The cancellations keep coming, and now Jinju has cancelled its 2009 Namgang Lantern Festival (진주남강유등축제), one of the best festivals in the country. It was originally to run from October 1st through the 12th. I’ve gone the past two years, and not only was it interesting during the day—unlike a lot of festivals, admittedly—but it was especially beautiful at night. On a post last fall I collected some pictures from around the wire: Over a million people attended the festival on the opening three-day weekend last year, and the year before there were an estimated three million during the two-week run. Granted, it is in celebration of killing Japanese people:

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival has its origin from the Jinjuseong battles in the worst suffering period of Imjinwaeran(Japanese Invasion). In October, 1592, when General Kim Si-min with his 3,800 men killed 20,000 Japanese troops, heightening national pride, the lanterns were used not only as military signals but also communicative methods between soldiers and their families.
In the 2nd attack in June, 1593, 70,000 citizens, officials and soldiers were killed, and after it, they began to float the lanterns on the river during Gaecheon Art Festival as a service for repose of the deceased and peace and prosperity of homes and nation.
Reflecting the long history of Jinju, Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival has settled as the symbol of royalty and wishing.

There have been several big festival cancellations this fall, including the Andong Mask Dance Festival, the Gwangju Kimchi Festival, and, as norepeat tells us, the Seoul International Fireworks Festival. Others have told me about others in the comment sections, and I’ll do my best to pass along word of the big ones locally and nationally. As I wrote before, though, if you made plans to attend festivals this fall, you’d better make back-up plans. Browsing the “Festivals” and “Swine flu in Korea” categories will bring you the round-up.

For more information, check out Brian’s website. It’s great for information on Korea.

8th Swine Flu Death Confirmed

Health authorities confirmed Wednesday influenza A caused the death of a 64-year-old woman, the eighth reported fatality nationwide.

The woman in Gangwon Province had been treated at a hospital and died of secondary complications from bacterial pneumonia brought on by the H1N1 infection.

The woman was confirmed as infected with the virus Aug. 28, with symptoms of a high fever, chills and difficulty in breathing. The hospital treated her with anti-viral medicine for five days.

There have been 9,968 reported cases of H1N1 flu so far since the first case was reported May 2.

However, considering the figure is only the reported number, there may be even more cases that the government has yet to confirm. Among current flu cases, eight patients are listed in serious condition, including three in intensive care units.

The Bucket List Lesson

This week and part of last I’ve been doing the bucket list with my high schoolers. The bucket list is a list of things you want to do before you die. This lesson is pretty simple and does not take much time to prepare for. I posted my lesson on waygook.org if you want to talk a look at it.

I explain to the class the meaning of the expression kick the bucket then explain what a bucket list is. I tell the students the things I want to do before I die then have them write down five things they want to do before they die then each student takes turns presenting. Students come up with some great answers and some pretty generic ones. All in all participation was pretty decent.

My lesson can be downloaded from here.

Swine Flu Amongst Other Things

Swine Flu is being taken more and more seriously as more and more people become infected. My tempature has been taken everyday as well as teachers and students when they come upon school property. As of September 3, 2009, a fourth victim in Korea died of the disease. It’s been reported as being in several schools and there are also many rumours. E Mart employees have it I heard through the grapevine as well as several middle and high schools within Mokpo. There also has been talk of shutting schools for a week to try and stem the flu. Here’s hoping.

There is an online gossip paper that unknown people started in Mokpo to gossip about what is/may happen within the city. I personally think this paper is an awful idea. It could easily slander someone if the author(s??) have a grudge against someone and the paper could be very divisive for us living in the city. I only hope it never catches on.

This has been my first week back at school as well. So far there is only one class that is meh. The rest have been pretty decent. So far it’s good to be back. This weekend I am off to another beach party in Wando which I’m looking forward to. The weather is starting to cool down in Jeolla and this may be my last weekend to swim and camp at the beach. I want to make the most of it.
