Proposal To Shut Down Korean Schools For A Week

Doctors Propose 2-Week Shutdown for Schools

Doctors advised the government Wednesday to temporarily close schools to contain further transmission of influenza A (H1N1).

“Students are one of the most vulnerable groups. Schools are becoming the largest route to mass transmission. We should ask schools to close for a week or two to prevent transmission among students and to let the ill ones take a rest for quick recovery,” said the Korean Medical Association.

“Unless we close the schools at this point, many students preparing for the College Scholastic Ability Test slated for Nov. 12 might get infected and may be unable to take the examination,” said Jwa hun-jung, the spokesman for the group.

The recommendation came after the government gave heads of schools the discretion to suspend classes. The education ministry said shutting down all schools may trigger a greater level of anxiety among students and parents.

The number of students infected exceeded 41,500 and the number of schools and military installations that have reported flu outbreaks reached over 2,400 nationwide as of Monday.

“We are facing about 4,000 new patients every day. The government needs to make a timely decision,” the group said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs stepped up efforts to install flu-patient-only intensive care units at designated hospitals.

The government also decided to recommend people visit local clinics instead of large hospitals so that patients in a serious condition can get intensive treatment.

About 50 doses of Tamiflu will be supplied to all pharmacies nationwide so those who have a fever over 37.6 degrees Celsius, have a runny nose and extreme cough can get the drugs after visiting doctors.

“It appears that we will see a constant increase in the number of infections till December, when vaccination of students conducted in mid-November may show an effect. It is time we make swift changes in policies to better cope with the situation,” the ministry said.

Authorities did not confirm whether they were looking to shut down all schools.

The only problem with this is that who will supervise the students? Parents can’t usually afford to take a week off from their jobs to look after kids and the kids would just hang out in public anyways. Pc Bangs, arcades, etc will just be even more populated with kids off, only increasing the chances of H1N1 being spread.

Shutting down schools would not really be an effective measure.

Jinju Lantern Festival Canned Because of Swine Flu

According to Brian in Jeollanamdo, the Jinju Lantern Festival has been canceled because of Swine Flu. This REALLY bums me out because this was one of the most amazing festivals I’ve seen in Korea and one that is beautiful both day and night (especially at night). More and more festivals are being closed due to Swine Flu scare.

  • The cancellations keep coming, and now Jinju has cancelled its 2009 Namgang Lantern Festival (진주남강유등축제), one of the best festivals in the country. It was originally to run from October 1st through the 12th. I’ve gone the past two years, and not only was it interesting during the day—unlike a lot of festivals, admittedly—but it was especially beautiful at night. On a post last fall I collected some pictures from around the wire: Over a million people attended the festival on the opening three-day weekend last year, and the year before there were an estimated three million during the two-week run. Granted, it is in celebration of killing Japanese people:

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival has its origin from the Jinjuseong battles in the worst suffering period of Imjinwaeran(Japanese Invasion). In October, 1592, when General Kim Si-min with his 3,800 men killed 20,000 Japanese troops, heightening national pride, the lanterns were used not only as military signals but also communicative methods between soldiers and their families.
In the 2nd attack in June, 1593, 70,000 citizens, officials and soldiers were killed, and after it, they began to float the lanterns on the river during Gaecheon Art Festival as a service for repose of the deceased and peace and prosperity of homes and nation.
Reflecting the long history of Jinju, Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival has settled as the symbol of royalty and wishing.

There have been several big festival cancellations this fall, including the Andong Mask Dance Festival, the Gwangju Kimchi Festival, and, as norepeat tells us, the Seoul International Fireworks Festival. Others have told me about others in the comment sections, and I’ll do my best to pass along word of the big ones locally and nationally. As I wrote before, though, if you made plans to attend festivals this fall, you’d better make back-up plans. Browsing the “Festivals” and “Swine flu in Korea” categories will bring you the round-up.

For more information, check out Brian’s website. It’s great for information on Korea.
